Chapter Three

Caroline gasped for air, her hands clutching at the bedspread beneath her. Eyes bulging, she tried to work out what was going on, but her mind felt heavy with sleep. She tried to swallow but couldn’t, realizing something was wrapped around her throat, constricting more with every movement she made. Unable to lift her arms, she tried to scream, but nothing came out. Squeezing her eyes shut, a vision of Aldrick appeared in her mind, and she mentally screamed his name as though he could somehow save her.

There was a loud bang, and Caroline tried to lift her head to see where it came from but found herself weakening as her eyes fluttered shut.

“Caroline!” She tried to open her eyes. It sounded like Aldrick, but she knew she must be hallucinating. She wanted to see him, real or not, yet she was distracted by the sensation of floating. Whatever was around her neck didn’t hurt so much anymore. It didn’t even alarm her that she’d stopped breathing—she just felt light—free, like a balloon floating up into the clouds. The floating sensation gave way to jolting bursts of pain, and she frowned, wanting to continue to float away. Caroline tried to get a sense of her body, feeling like something was pinning her, holding her. Was it Aldrick? Why was he running? Why was he stopping her from floating away like she wanted? There was only darkness, and Caroline couldn’t tell if her eyes were open or closed. Muffled voices neared, though she couldn’t say how many. They sounded angry, alarmed, even worried. Caroline wanted to tell them not to worry, that she was fine, but her mouth still didn’t want to cooperate. Something soft enveloped her, making her think of the comfort of her own bed, and she smiled to herself, hoping this meant they’d leave her alone and let her go back to sleep.
